OSRD (Open Source Railway Designer) is a free, open-source web application developed by the OpenRail Association. Designed for railway professionals, it offers tools for infrastructure design, capacity analysis, timetabling, and simulation. OSRD aims to streamline railway planning and operations through collaborative and transparent development.

🚆 Key Features

1. Infrastructure Design

  • Create and edit detailed railway infrastructure models.
  • Utilize a customizable infrastructure map and editor.
  • Import existing data using the RailJSON format

2. Timetabling

  • Design transport services to meet transit needs.
  • Access a rolling stock database and timetabling tools.
  • Optimize train paths to minimize energy use.
  • Upcoming features include automated conflict detection and interactive timetable diagrams

3. Capacity Analysis

  • Assess infrastructure’s ability to meet demand.
  • Balance capacity with transportation needs.
  • Use signaling simulators and throughput analyzers.
  • Future developments aim for automated timetable robustness assessment

4. Short-Term Planning

  • Allocate train paths shortly before departure times.
  • Consider planned infrastructure work and avoid conflicts.
  • Provide timely and accurate responses, essential for growing rail freight demand

5. Simulation Engine

  • Simulate train movements with realistic physics.
  • Incorporate driver behavior and signaling reactions.
  • Handle both full-trip and incremental path simulations

6. Open Governance and Collaboration

  • Developed by a team at SNCF Réseau with support from the French state and the EU.
  • Open to contributions from railway companies and individual developers.
  • Participate in the roadmap and technical direction based on contributions
